Shy intelligent Anne Elliot is 27, and has given up any hope of ever marrying. Seven years ago, she refused to marry the man she loved, Captain Wentworth, because her family thought him too poor and undistinguished.
Wentwortg has since made a fortune as a naval officer, but when Wentworth and Anne meet again, few word are passed between them, and he seems only to be cold to Anne. She miserably watches the burgeoning friendship between him and her sister-in-law Louisa Musgrove.
Thinking she has no hope of rekindling Wentworth's love, Anne heads to Bath, where her immensely rich cousin, Mr. William Elliot, begins to take an interest in her. Wentworth follows her to Bath, where he is horrified to learn that Elliott proposed.
Anne tells him that the rumors of her being about to marry Elliott are entirely unfounded, and he at last declares his constant and undying love for her. ELated, Anne becomes reconciled to the only man she has ever truly loved and he to her.
